There's no "obsoleting hardware via new operating systems", they just decide they want to set a new baseline, whether that's 64-bit-capable EFI, Metal-capable graphics, or most recently eliminating all 32-bit so everything can slim out the old code and depend on 64-bit. Just wanted to contribute and share my findings. To incorporate a Mac Mini into their homelab. I hope this helps out someone who has a Mac Mini looking to re-purpose it.

Try to install Server 2016 while having MacOS 10.15 with Bootcamp it will error out. Remove the MacOS from the equation and it works. I presume it was a software restriction by Apple. Now I turn on the Mac Mini and get Windows Server 2016. The Boot Manager must think it is a Bootcamp partition and just let it work. Then moving the PC Hard Drive to a Mac Mini. My theory is by installing a Windows OS (don't activate it) on a PC. There were users whom found out that you could run the "latest" OS to run on an "unsupported model". I remembered years ago that Apple obsoletes their hardware via new Operating Systems. Thinking there should be no reason it would not work on a Mac Mini running Intel.

This article stated how it was possible to install Server 2016 onto Dell Optiplex using the Windows 10 Drivers. The hardware specs were a bit similar in CPU and RAM. Originally was considering purchasing a refurbished Mini PC from Lenovo, Dell USSF, HP mini, Intel NUC. Going to setup AD, DHCP, DNS and etc and turn off R710 in favor of this for now. The installation erased Windows 10 Pro and there is Windows Server 2016 running natively on my Mac Mini.

I would hear the Mac Mini chime and restart a few times. My Server 2016 Key is being used on the R710, which I will deactivate or pay for Server 2019. I made sure the Ethernet cable was disconnected. I saw the Server 2016 AutoPlay Interface appear. My curiosity led me to install Server 2016 via external DVD drive while running Windows 10. I logged in and went on the internet via Ethernet without issue. The Mac Mini just booted to Windows 10 without an issue.

Turn on the Mac Mini expecting to see Apple Recovery, Boot Manager or an Error stating NO MAC OS INSTALLED. I replace the original Mac Mini HDD with the WD SSD drive. The SSD drive had Windows 10 Pro 圆4 bit installed. I re-purposed a WD Blue 2.5 500GB SSD from a laptop that I plan on donating.

Stumbled on an article how this one person was able to install Server 2012 via Bootcamp then upgrade to Server 2016. While researching I found that the only way to accomplish this was to install Virtual Box on MacOS. Been trying to find other ways to reduce energy, noise and heat while keeping a homelab. Also have a Dell R710 on a network rack that tends to be noisy, produces heat and takes a bit of juice to run. Have a Mac Mini from 2014 that was used to pass Apple Certifications. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice.
